All About LA Diamonds

Oct 25th 2019

You may find yourself in the historic Los Angeles Jewelry District on your search for diamonds - and for good reason. Not only does the LA Jewelry District have some of the best selection of jewelry and diamonds, but they also have expert jewelers who work directly with you. It is crucial when shopping for diamonds to go to specialized locations to assure you are getting the highest quality diamonds for the money you are spending.

Diamonds are priced following two specific criteria - rare characteristics and diamonds rated by carat, color, clarity, and cut.

Rare Characertistics

Diamonds are priced following specific guidelines, including how unique each characteristic of the diamond is. However, diamonds used in jewelry are often rated on their physical attributes as well as how rare they may be.
Quality diamonds used in jewelry don’t have any visible minerals or inclusions, they sparkle and shine and are white in color. These characteristics are what you are probably seeking during the search for your perfect gem. The combination of appearance and rarity makes the pricing of diamonds a process that requires experience and expertise.

Four C's - Cut, Clarity, Carat, Color

Diamonds are rated on their four C’s, so let’s break down exactly what each of these mean.

  • Cut - Some cuts of diamonds are more expensive than others, this can determine how expensive a diamond may be.
  • Clarity - The clarity of the diamond references the flaws the diamond possesses, the fewer flaws a diamond generally has then the more expensive it will also be. (Don’t worry, most flaws are unseen to the naked eye.)
  • Carat - Carat is the weight of the diamond. Generally, the higher the carat, the rarer the diamond is. Increased rarity will cause the diamond to be more expensive.
  • Color - Color is determined on a scale that ranges from “D” (the purest white) to “Z,” but any diamond between “D” and “I” will appear white.

The Customer is Always Right

Ultimately, the decision for which diamond you choose is up to you. Diamonds are a cherished gift and life decision no matter the color or quality. These factors are often not distinguishable by the average person (most people don’t go around with a magnifying glass) and are instead set by experts who have dedicated their lives to the craftsmanship of fine diamond jewelry, so don’t worry too much and instead focus on the significance and sentimental value it will have.
